Trip overview

Eddie has been on the road again! Wohooo!! Sadly, the world has not been informed, as it turns out his caretakers are some sloppy individuals, not caring about eager fans waiting for what MUST feel like decades for new updates on how the coolest eagle in the world are doing and where he has been lately.

Well, here it comes: Eddie has conquered Egypt and visited a bunch of mummies and got so inspired that he considered becoming one. Luckily, he came to his senses as it involved a lot of horizontal positions in dark boxes, plus wrapping himself in and out of a lot of linen every time someone asked for a selfie.

He set off 2 days after Christmas leaving cold weather behind and enjoyed his flight from Oslo via Istanbul, eagerly waiting to step out in a much warmer and friendlier environment. What he didn’t expect was the cold weather who had followed his steps and encompassed the entire north of Egypt, leaving his beak blue…er! Somehow he’s starting to get used to blue beak and shivering cold, after passing one of the highest motorable roads in Ladakh and on his trip to Antarctica but as there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing (…which is an idiom to be discussed when you only have feathers) there is no time for sulking, and Eddie sets off to explore Cairo, a multimillion city where new and old cultures blend with each other and creates a fascinating melting pot. The pyramids of Giza were of course on the top of his list, along with the Great Sphinx of Giza. The view didn’t let him down, even though he felt kind of sorry for the Sphinx who didn’t have the same impressive and masculine beak as himself.

The time was short in Cairo, but before he left, he also visited the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization where he was granted an audience with 20 royal kings and queens in dark crypts. To have been wrapped up in linen for almost 3000 years, Eddie was very impressed at how well the mummies had been preserved, as he could still see clear details on the bodies with their long hair and nails.

After 2 days packed with impressions, Eddie turned his beak into the desert where the next stop was Bahariya Oasis, a 5 hours’ drive southwest of the capital. Safari Camp Bahariya Oasis was booked in advance and they also arranged a car from Cairo to the Oasis, a tour in and outside the oasis, as well as dropping him off in Luxor. The oasis itself is a small village surrounded by more than 3 million palm trees and a large salt lake. Outside of the oasis it is only desert, but what a desert!! It changed every 5 km with unique geological formations, including black volcanic rocks (Black Desert), sparkling quartz crystals (Crystal Mountain), white chalk/limestone rock formations (White Desert) and Valley of Agabat where Eddie even did sandboarding… Probably as the first eagle ever and his supreme guide and driver was mighty impressed! As Eddie had left Christmas behind, New Year 2025 was celebrated outside his tent in the middle of the White Desert, listening to the silence and watching shooting stars instead of noisy fireworks. I.T.  W.A.S  A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! 🔥

There was no time for lingering, so January 1 was spent in a car driving through the desert towards Luxor which took 10 hours, including bribing the police at one of the multiple checkpoints along the road. The checkpoints exist to control the movement in the area due to security concerns, particularly related to terrorism, smuggling and the region’s proximity to the porous borders with Sudan and Libya.

Eddie arrived as expected, safe and sound in Luxor. After being in the serene desert, seeing almost nobody, except his caretakers who follow him like a shadow, it was a shock to come to a buzzling tourist-machine and even though he is used to being followed by fans, it sometimes got a bit overwhelming. He was also surprised that sooooo many locals recognized him and said they worked in the kitchen of his hotel… especially when his hotel didn’t have a kitchen… 🤔 He concluded it couldn’t be touts but simply fans who made a desperate excuse to find the courage to talk to him. Who would have thought that Eddie was such a huge star in Egypt!? ️✨

Luxor itself is, in addition to fans and tourists (and tourist-buses, tourist-touts and tourist-prices) packed with sights. It is called the world’s greatest open-air museum, and it offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. The must see are Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of Queens and of course the Valley of Kings, where the Tomb of Tutankhamun is the highlight. Even though it was THE tomb that everybody wanted to see, preferably squeezed in at the same time, it was unique and Eddie was grateful to have seen (partially at least) the Tut himself.

Leaving Luxor and all the fuzz behind, Eddie jumped on a train (choo-choo-chooooo! 🚂) heading south along the Nile River and ended up in Aswan, where he checked in on Elephantine Island. The island is in the middle of the Nile River and is a historical and archaeological site as well as being the home of two small Nubian villages, an ancient civilization with rich history, distinct culture, and their own language.

His caretakers were over the moon happy, as the island felt like stepping 200 years back in time. You could cross over to the island in a 10 minute boat ride and walk around on unpaved dusty sand roads and watch busy Aswan on one side and sand dunes on the other side. Dust isn’t Eddie’s favourite environment, but he lightened up when he was sailing down the Nile in airy feluccas which is a traditional wooden sailboat.

As Eddie was far south in Egypt and desperately wanted to see Abu Simbel, but hadn’t arranged a tour, he fixed a driver through a random person on the street for the 4-hour drive toward the Sudan border. The pickup was at 4 am in the morning and at one point, after crossing the Aswan High Dam, he got a bit worried he was getting kidnapped by a stalker when the car suddenly exited the highway and headed into the pitch black desert… Luckily, the detour was to avoid toll roads and beautiful Abu Simbel was reached by 08.30 and before the crowds arrived he could see one of the most impressive sights in Egypt. The site is famous for two massive rock-cut temples built by Pharaoh Ramesses II and dedicated to Queen Nefertari and himself, which gave Eddie some strange ideas like ”can they, can I”… Luckily he came back to his senses, mind and ground, when he saw his eagle ancestors already intricately carved in hundreds on the walls inside, and on several proud statues, outside the temples and decided he shouldn’t outshine them. Abu Simbel was a quick visit but one of the most impressive sights on the trip, also because of the massive job that was done in 1960, where the whole world joined together in relocating Abu Simbel 200 meters inland and 65 meters up to avoid it being submerged after the building of the Aswan High Dam.

From Abu Simbel, the trip quickly came to an end, but his caretakers insisted on having a few relaxing days in the sun at the Red Sea. The train ride from Aswan to Qena went smoothly, and finding a taxi to take them the short 1,5-hour drive towards the Red Sea and Safaga was supposed to be smooth, but the police wanted it differently. As Eddie and his caretakers were spotted leaving the train station, it ended up in numerous calls to the Chief of Police, answering questions and explaining a lot of things that didn’t make sense and haggling about the price for the taxi with the police instead of the driver. They were happy when the police decided to let them go, but the happiest were probably the police and the driver, as they most likely shared the overcharged taxi fee.

Warm, relaxing and sunny days next to the Red Sea were good for all involved. Everybody had dust on their brain and Eddie felt faded after the dust had piled up in his shiny feathers during the trip, so he looked forward to pampering himself getting back home and turning into the-smashingly-shiny-and-most-good-looking-(and humble)-eagle the world was used to. Especially since his next trip was soon coming up and it involved much less dust. STAY TUNED!

Planning

We thought Tbilisi-Istanbul was a no brainer in terms of planning, but this trip was easier even though we searched with ‘’lys og lykter’’ (a norwegian phrase which translates to ‘’with lights and lanterns’’ and means that a v.e.r.y t.h.o.r.o.u.g.h search is made) to see if we could make it a bit more strenuous for ourselves. But nope…Not even a travel warning from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it difficult… Not because of our supremacy, but simply because our itinerary didn’t include being close to the borders to Libya or visiting North Sinai which (at that time) could lead to close encounters of the missiles sent between Israel and Iran.

The most difficult, was deciding where to go with the amount of time we had, as it felt like a choice overload to select among all the spectacular places Egypt has to offer.

Once we decided, we had to arrange a visa, flight tickets, accommodation, drivers and permits (YAY we thought!) since we were travelling to areas that required this. Sadly, the drivers arranged the permits for us, so we could only watch in awe and have the feeling of being soooo close, but still soooo far away when we watched the drivers arrange it from the backseat of our car. The last part of the trip wasn’t decided upon, due to too many uncertainties and choices, so we decided to do this on the go.

To sum it up quickly:

  • Visa = Scribble some doodles on a website (okay… it was maybe a bit more formal)
  • Permits = Arranged on the spot by driver (so sad!), including some baksheesh
  • Flight tickets = Arranged on the World Wide Web
  • Train tickets = On the spot
  • Accommodation = Some on the www. and some on our way
  • Drivers = By contacting the accommodation in advance (except one on the spot… see trip overview)
